Captains log, J. Sanso: " My feet are freezing "

Hello.

I am sailing with bad visibility – about half a mile, with wind and one-metre waves. There is good wind and also a good angle so I really can’t complain about anything! Well, I can complain about one thing and that is the cold – or more than the cold, the humidity.

It isn’t that cold – just 10°, but it is the humidity that gives such a strong sensation of cold and on a day like today, when the sun doesn’t come out, it is even worse.

My feet are freezing for the last four days because of the humidity and I have given myself shock treatment. I took out my new boots and put on brand new dry and clean socks but my toes were still frozen. I then took two bags I usually use to heat up my food – the hot packs – and I strapped them around the boot with American tape for ten minutes – and finally my feet felt better!

There is now less to go before the next gate and then the final gate and heading before Cape Horn. I have made up a lot of miles and I am still hoping to recover some more in the next few hours but that is yet to be seen.
