Like all racing sailboats, IMOCAs are identified by a unique sail number. In contrast to other classes where the number is assigned usually according to its launch date, there is more flexibility for the Vendée Globe racers. More often than not each skipper can choose a number which means something significant to him or her. And that number can stay with the boat when it moves on to a new owner or alternatively the skipper can usually hold on to the number
