As it usually does with these things, the news came entirely out of the blue. At one o’clock in the morning French time, IMOCA Open 60 leaders François Gabart and Michel Desjoyeaux who had been at the front of the fleet since 17th November, revealed that they had lost their mast. The crew are fine, had cut the rig clear and were heading to Salvador de Bahia which was 140 miles away when the incident happened.
