It was on 26th November 1989 aboard the committee boat at 1515hrs that Éric Tabarly sent the thirteen solo sailors on their way in the first non-stop solo round the world race, the Vendée Globe Challenge. In the minds of the competitors and those watching, there was one big question: how many would make it to the finish?
