Tracking the fleet to Newport… and beyond

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet tracker, which provides position updates every six hours, as well as live coverage during the first and last 24 hours of each leg, will be live for the final three legs of the race, and in live test mode most for the remainder of the current leg.

In anticipation of live coverage from Newport onwards through the finish of the race, the Volvo Ocean Race technical team is testing the tracker during the current leg, with enhanced live coverage anticipated for as much of Leg 8 from Itajaií to Newport as possible.

Since the begining of the race, the technical team has worked on processes to maximise the reliablity of transmission of data from the boats as well as the live tracker to the point where a 'soft launch' on Leg 8, as a test for the final three legs of the race, is now possible.

Fans should keep in the mind this doesn't change the situation on board the boats. The sailors will still only receive position reports every six hours, or via AIS when they are within about 10 miles of each other.

Enjoy this enhanced coverage and let us know your thoughts via Facebook or Twitter.
