The leading virtual skippers in Leg 6 of the official Volvo Ocean Race game have entered the final 1,000 miles, triggering a sprint to the Auckland finish line.
Leading the charge is German player nico550 who has shot to the top of the rankings thanks to a course west of New Caledonia.
After two quick Doldrums crossings in Legs 2 and 4, the weather gods decided to punish the fleet by placing an enormous wind hole just south of the Equator.
But as Leg 6 enters its 17th day, the fleet is finally back up to speed as they relish in the reaching conditions brought on by an anticyclone centred on the Tasman Sea.
As always, it’s incredibly tight at the top with just six miles separating the top ten players – and with several days of racing still to come, no place is secure.
Leg 4 winner Tessa94 of Sweden is back in the running for the Leg 6 spoils, trailing nico550 by half a mile, while France’s Sentosa CNV is 0.8 miles behind.
It’s so close that the order of the top 10 is constantly changing. Even the top 50 boats are only split by 20 miles.
As Leg 6 enters its final few days the key to success will lie in the players’ downwind tactics – when to gybe and start the last section in to Auckland.
