Turn the Tide on Plastic skipper Dee Caffari spoke live on Sky News about the critical issue of marine debris and plastic pollution.
Her Volvo Ocean Race team, which is backed by the Mirpuri Foundation and OFF, will be amplifying United Nations Environment’s Clean Seas campaign around the world in 2017-18 edition.
The move is part of a renewed sustainability focus for the race, which is also working closely with 11th Hour Racing and AkzoNobel to raise awareness around ocean health, with a particular focus on plastic pollution.
A series of Ocean Summits will be held in key stopovers along the race route with a goal to produce meaningful action to combat the problem.
Caffari recently announced six new sailors for the team, which will be youth-focused and fully mixed. Brits Bleddyn Mon and Henry Bomby will step onboard, alongside Portugal’s Bernardo Freitas and Frederico Pinheiro de Melo, Italian Olympian Francesca Clapcich and Aussie rookie Lucas Chapman.
Two-time Volvo Ocean Race veteran Liz Wardley will also race with the team, which will announce further crew shortly.
