Captain’s log, S. Davies: "The final run home"

We have now passed Cap Finistere and are on the final run home across the Bay of Biscay!

360 miles to Les Sables d'Olonne…. I still have my track from the Vendee Globe start on my Maxsea and it reminds me how fast and furious it was as we set off just one month ago… This time it will take me and Savéol about three times as long to do the same distance, which fits, as if you do the maths, our mast is now one third of the size it normally is :-( We have a new sail configuration today, thanks to the Pôle Finistère Course au Large who have lent me an old Figaro Solent jib. Right now it is hoisted the right way up, but when it gets windier we will use it sideways in the place of the sail from Madera which has unfortunately disintegrated (it was rather old and tired!!) Today I opened a package marked "special Christmas meal surprise!" – and the boys started getting excited about what was inside…. and getting hungry too…. and then I discovered that there were three individual Christmas puddings and a pot of Brandy Butter – to my DELIGHT and to their DISMAY (the French hate Christmas puddings!!!) I can't wait to eat one, as even though it is not Christmas I am celebrating getting past Cap Finistère!

Luckily for the boys there are plenty of other gourmet delights to eat so they are not going hungry…. the fishing attempts have been pretty disappointing too as we obviously caught a BIG fish – but it was so BIG that it broke the line and swam off with Seb's super lures. He has more and today’s failure has just spurred him on to try harder and so the line has been re-armed for more fishing tomorrow – we will eat Sushi one day soon!

Seb and Gerald are now getting some good rest in because tomorrow is the big Kite-experiment day and there is a lot of pressure and expectation on them now after all their talk and preparations!! We will keep you updated with the progress as soon as the first kite is launched….
