2012 has been a bittersweet year for Polish skipper Zbigniew “Gutek” Gutkowski, who worked hard with his Energa sailing team to prepare for the 2012-2013 Vendée Globe but eventually had to retire from the race on November 21 because of autopilot issues. Yet the sudden end of the adventure has only given Gutek more time and determination to focus on 2013 and the projects and challenges the new year is bringing.
“ We have a very fast and very good boat, and I do not want her to stay in port too long” he says. “In January we want to leave the Canaries. First we’ll sail as fast as possible from Las Palmas to Guadeloupe, trying to make a record run. Next, we want to take part in three Caribbean events: the Pineapple Cup, the Caribbean 600 and the Heineken Regatta”.
“After racing in the Caribbean, which will also let us test the boat and
check various settings, we’ll sail to New York. Being on the other side of the Atlantic would be a good opportunity for attempt to beat the New York – Lizard solo record, a classic challenge. I have a very fast boat and if the weather pattern is favourable enough, setting a new record is possible”, the Pole adds.
“ It would be a great way to prepare for the next challenge, the Transat Jacques Vabre, starting November 3, 2013, one of the most important events in the IMOCA Open 60 calendar.”
“ These are our sport plans, I hope that I can meet them in 100%. This new 2013 year promises to be very busy and I invite you to follow the Energa Sailing Team pages and accounts on the social media. Stay tuned for more news! ”
