After beginning Wednesday in sixth position, Team Brunel fans are waking up on Thursday to see the Dutch boat in second place – and hunting down leaders MAPFRE, following an incredible 24-hour comeback on the crucial Leg 10 of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Bouwe Bekking's team went into this leg knowing that they needed to beat the two red boats – MAPFRE and Dongfeng – to effectively keep their trophy dreams alive with one leg to go.

But it hasn't been looking good for the yellow boat so far, with the early stages of the leg from Cardiff to Gothenburg seeing them fall back to the wrong end of the fleet.

After beginning the day in sixth, Brunel jumped into fifth at 0300 UTC on Wednesday, sitting some 8 miles behind leaders MAPFRE – and it's been fast progress ever since.

With night falling and 35 knots blowing on deck on Wednesday evening, Bekking's team sat in third place, one mile behind Dongfeng Race Team in second, and three behind Leg 10 leaders MAPFRE.

"We're going well – we've been pushing hard," said Bekking in a live link to the boat as they passed the Orkney Islands. "We're ripping right now and it feels good when you see the distance to the two boats ahead getting shorter.

"It's not the win or nothing – if someone else wins, that's fine, as long as we pass the red boats. We have to beat them to keep our hopes alive of an overall win."

He added: "Everything is possible, you have to keep the boat in one piece, but it's going to be a tough last night on the ocean."

At just before 0100 UTC on Thursday, Brunel passed Dongfeng to take second spot – and complete a huge 24-hour comeback at a crucial point in the race.

With just over 12 hours to go on the Race's penultimate leg, Brunel know that if they can take the win, it could set up a grandstand Leg 11 with the three leading boats all on the same points.
